Social Studies Field Trip to the Bill Reid Gallery Oct. 26 – Photos

Did you know that Vancouver is located on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations?

These Indigenous nations lived on the land we know today as Vancouver before colonial settlement. As more settlers arrived in Vancouver the Coast Salish peoples were forced to relocate due to colonization, a process by which a dominant group settles in an area and establishes control over its inhabitants.

The Social Studies 11 and 12 classes visited the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art two weeks ago and were able to learn more about Indigenous histories and Indigenous survival through witnessing contemporary Indigenous art. Much of acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid’s art is in the gallery, as well as those of other artists. You may have already seen Bill Reid’s art already even if you have not visited the gallery; if you have been in the international terminal of the Vancouver International Airport (near the food court), you may have seen his sculpture, The Jade Canoe.
